The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking to appoint an experienced Research Administrator to provide high level administrative and research support to Richard Durbin in the scientific management of his areas of responsibility. This will include supporting the large scale Human Variation projects Professor Durbin leads on, such as the 1,000 Genomes and some aspects of the UK10K project, under the guidance of the manager of that project.
The successful applicant will be responsible for identifying and bringing forward priorities, researching and preparing briefing materials, planning and organising project events, teleconferences and meetings with collaborators and collating and disseminating reports. The role-holder will also be responsible for the administration of EU grants and will be required to monitor and report on budgets. In addition the role will provide administrative support to the Head of Human Genetics and members of the Human Genetics faculty working in related areas on an agreed basis.
Essential Skills
The successful applicant will be qualified in a related discipline to degree level as a minimum, or will have gained equivalent experience. You will have previously worked within an academic and/or scientific research institute and will have the ability to synthesize large volumes of information. You will be a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills. You will have exceptional organisational skills and will have a proven record of meeting deadlines and working in a pressured environment. You will also have financial awareness and an understanding of budgets.
Ideal Skills
Previous experience/good working knowledge of molecular biology would be an advantage.
Other information
The group has a leading role in coordinating the international 1,000 Genomes Project collaborative project to sequence the genomes ultimately of 2,500 people, and is moving on to lead projects with UK collaborators to sequence the genomes of 10,000 primarily UK people with extensive phenotype data. We also participate in multiple additional collaborative genetic variation projects.
